LIP AUGMENTATION & GUMMY SMILE CORRECTION

Lip Enhancement or Lip Augmentation

Voluminous and symmetrical lips have become a hallmark of beauty. The mouth changes as a person ages due to gravity and the loss of elasticity in the skin. The upper lip lengthens and sags, the corners of the mouth droop, the curvature of the lips diminish, and the “cupid’s bow” loses definition. The lower teeth, rather than upper teeth, show when the lips are slightly parted. Furrows in the nasolabial folds, often called “parentheses”, as well  as deep “marionette lines” give a person a down turned and sad appearance. Lip enhancement or lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips, restores symmetry when necessary, and can reduce unsightly wrinkles around the mouth.

Lip enhancement or lip augmentation can be achieved by injecting the lips with a bio-compatible dermal filler.  One injection is usually sufficient to produce the desired result, however repeat treatments are occasionally necessary to maintain results.

Correction of a Gummy Smile or Asymmetrical Smile

Your smile should be one of the most attractive things about you. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some people have excessive amounts of their gums showing when they smile. This is known as a “gummy smile.”  This can lead to feeling self conscious and inhibited. People with this issue often avoid social situations that may involve laughing or they might avoid family photos, or at least feel self conscious about smiling in photos.

There are several causes of a Gummy Smile. One of these is an overactive muscle in the upper lip, and doesn’t involve the gums or teeth at all. This can be easily corrected. This is a quick, virtually pain free procedure done in the office. A few simple neurotoxin injections, such as Botox or Dysport, placed in strategic locations will prevent the upper lip from raising excessively high when you smile. The full results are seen after several days. At that time, you upper lip will not raise as high, revealing only your beautiful smile and personality. The effects are fairly long lasting, only requiring two or three treatments per year depending on the individual patient. Additionally, some people  have an asymmetrical or irregular smile. One side of the upper lip may be drooping lower or raised higher than the rest of the lip during smiling or laughing. This can also be corrected.

Surgical Lip Lift

Sometimes the issue a patient presents with cannot be addressed non surgically. In regards to the lips, the issue might be a long distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip. Adding volume cannot reduce this distance effectively. A surgical lip lift can shorten this distance. A lip lift is an effective technique used to enhance or restore a patient’s lip shape. As we age, this distance can sometimes increase. The lip lift shortens the length of the aging upper lip. It also enhances the curvature and appearance of the upper lip vermilion, thus making the lips appear more plump and youthful. The lip lift procedure can also correct congenital asymmetry or “unevenness” of the lips. The scar that is placed in the natural shadow crease between the nostril and the lip is virtually undetectable. Click here to learn more about Lip Lift Surgery.
